In early October 2001, David Rees posted eight comic strips on his
Web site ( http://www.mnftiu.cc/mnftiu.cc/war.html ), in which office
workers discussed the War on Terrorism. The response was overwhelming.
E-mails proliferated around the country as people, alternately thrilled
or disgusted by Get Your War On forwarded the URL to their friends.
Since that night, the site has received more than twenty million hits,
and Rees continues to add material that responds to the events of the
past monthsincluding the perhaps imminent War In Iraq, the Enron
scandal, John Ashcrofts detentions of suspected terrorists, the Office
for Homeland Security, Israeli incursions and Palestinian suicide
bombings, and the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals decision on the Pledge
of Allegiance, to name but a few.
David Rees has embarked on a speaking tour promoting his new Get
Your War On book and raising money for Adopt-a-Minefield and de-mining
efforts in Afghanistan. The presentation will feature selected readings
from "Get Your War On", with comments and source material for some of
the more infamous strips; comments on the power of popular culture/role
of humor in dealing with personal and national trauma; how and why "Get
Your War On" spread via the internet, receiving millions of hits in a
number of weeks;
Additionally, there will be a screening of a video shot in
Afghanistan in the Spring and David will describe how he hooked up with
Adopt-A-Minefield; There will be a presentation about Adopt-A-Minefield
and Adopt-A-Team, with specific emphasis on Mine Dog and Detection
Center Team #5 and their work in western Afghanistan.
